Hebei Weitong Completes Fiberglass Concentration Tower Project for Jinan Fanxin Power

Hebei Weitong FRP Co., Ltd. has successfully completed the fiberglass concentration tower project for Jinan Fanxin Power, as part of the FGD wastewater zero liquid discharge EPC project at the Pannan 2 × 660 MW Low-Calorific-Value Coal Resource Comprehensive Utilization Power Generation Project.

Project Overview: Two Fiberglass Concentration Towers

The project comprises two fiberglass evaporation and concentration towers, which serve as the core wastewater volume reduction equipment in the power plant’s zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system.

Each tower measures 6 meters in diameter and 22.045 meters in overall height. The towers incorporate specialized corrosion-resistant FRP materials, with temperature resistance tailored to individual tower sections. They are designed to withstand chloride concentrations of up to 200,000 mg/L and accommodate flue gas temperatures ranging from 90°C to 158°C.

Corrosion-Resistant FRP Design and On-Site Construction

On-site filament winding was used to produce integrated FRP tower structures. The design addresses the highly corrosive conditions associated with flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater from low-calorific-value coal-fired units, including high chloride and fluoride concentrations and strong acidity. It also addresses the corrosion and erosion challenges commonly encountered with conventional metal equipment.

Working in accordance with the project’s technical specifications, Hebei Weitong’s engineering team used 3D simulation to evaluate internal flow distribution and structural performance under operational, wind, snow, and seismic loads.

These analyses supported the optimization of the sectional on-site winding and construction plan. Strict quality control over shell gas-tightness and structural strength helped address the challenges of constructing large, highly corrosion-resistant FRP towers on site.

Waste Heat Recovery for Wastewater Concentration

“Once commissioned, the two towers will use waste heat from flue gas to evaporate and concentrate a combined FGD wastewater flow of 15 m³/h from the two generating units,” said the project manager.

“The wastewater will be concentrated into a high-salinity slurry with a chloride concentration of approximately 200 g/L. Subsequent solidification treatment will complete the zero liquid discharge process, helping reduce the volume of material requiring solid waste disposal and the plant’s water consumption.”

Long-Term Reliability Under Variable Loads

“The FRP towers and associated flue gas ductwork are designed for long-term corrosion-resistant operation, reducing maintenance frequency and operating costs while accommodating variable-load operation during deep load cycling,” the project manager added.

The completion of this project marks another step in Hebei Weitong’s delivery of FRP equipment for FGD wastewater zero liquid discharge systems. It also strengthens the company’s experience in environmental protection equipment for low-calorific-value coal-fired circulating fluidized bed units in southwestern China.
