Depending on their geometry, reducers are primarily categorized into two types:
1. Concentric Reducer
Features: Flow lines change symmetrically as the fluid passes through it.
Applications: Most vertical pipelines and horizontal pipelines without specific flow distribution requirements.
2. Eccentric Reducer
Features:
Flat-bottom eccentric: The flat side is at the bottom. This is the most commonly used eccentric reducer, used in horizontal pipelines. It prevents air pockets from forming at the diameter change, facilitates emptying, and maintains a consistent bottom elevation.
Top-flat eccentric: The flat side is at the top. Less commonly used, it can be used to prevent the accumulation of solid particles at the top.
Applications: Horizontally installed pump inlet piping, pipelines that need to be emptied to prevent gas accumulation, or where a specific pipeline elevation must be maintained.
Main Application Areas
Pump inlet
An eccentric reducer (flat bottom) is typically used to prevent gas accumulation at the pump inlet and protect the pump impeller. It must be installed in a "flat top" configuration, with the flat portion at the top, to ensure automatic venting.
Pump outlet
A concentric reducer is typically used to connect to an expanded pipe to reduce flow rate.
Connecting piping systems to equipment interfaces
When the equipment interface size does not match the piping size.
Process requirements
Where flow rate needs to be changed to match process requirements.
In all fiberglass reinforced plastic piping systems where pipe diameter changes are required.
